Healthier Living Workshops - Free of Charge
Designed To Help People With Chronic Conditions

If you have a chronic condition such as arthritis, asthma, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, emphysema, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, etc., you can learn to manage your symptoms and enjoy a healthier life by attending a Healthy Living Workshop. People who have completed the workshops report many benefits – increased energy, less stress, more self-confidence, and fewer doctor visits.

Participants are expected to attend eight weekly sessions, each lasting 1 1/2 hours. Family members and friends who help participants at home are also invited to attend. Sessions include a variety of fun activities in a very supportive atmosphere. 

Some topics covered include:
-techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
-breathing techniques and guided imagery to reduce stress
-exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
-appropriate use of medications
-talking with family, friends, and health professionals so they understand your needs
-nutrition
-how to evaluate new health treatments

Walking Programs (Open to all)
The Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is sponsoring the Springfield In Motion Walking Program. This walking program is free of charge and offers free pedometers and water bottles to their participants, along with other incentives. In the good weather, they are walking the Toonerville trail and when the weather gets cold, they will move indoors to the Southern Vermont Area Recreation Center. The Riverside Middle School and the Springfield High School will also allow walkers to use their facilities during after school hours when the weather is inclement. Groups are also meeting regularly in Bellows Falls. At this time, over 50 people are walking throughout the week and plans include developing walking groups in Chester and Ludlow, VT.

Safe Steps Fall Prevention (Open to all)
The VNA & Hospice offers the Safe Steps Fall Prevention Program. Home safety visits are offered, free of charge, and home modifications are available to reduce fall risks. Grab bars, stair rails, non-slip rugs, bath mats, power failure lights, tub seats and much more are provided, free of charge or by voluntary donation. Seniors (or those at risk of falling) living in Athens, Bellows Falls, Chester, Grafton, Londonderry, Rockingham, Springfield, Saxtons River, Westminister, or Windham are eligible for all Safe Steps fall prevention services.

April 25th - Free Car Seat Safety Checks
FREE car seat checkups are available, every 4th Friday of the month, April - October, 2:00 pm—6:00 pm. The Fitting Station will be at the Springfield Plaza as long as the weather is good, otherwise, it will be at the Springfield Fire Dept. For more information, call 885-7686.

April 29 & 30, 2008 - AARP Safe Driver Program
This AARP Safe Driver Program will be offered at the Robert L. Johnson Post 771, in Springfield on Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday, April 30, 2008, from 9 am to 1 pm. Instructed by Bob Ammel, AARP Instructor, this two-part program improves driving skills in people age 50 and over. It helps people refine existing skills while developing safe, defensive driving techniques that save lives. Participants have fewer crashes and may save on insurance premiums.  The cost of the class is $10. Checks should be made out to AARP. Ready-Set-Stop Smoking Cessation Classes (weekly class)
Springfield Hospital Library -  FREE

This six-week session includes weekly meetings to learn about the health effects of nicotine, NRT replacement options, and health benefits after stopping smoking. NRT is available, free of charge, to all Vermont residents who attend the class. Stress management, nutrition, and help with cravings are offered within the course. Materials are given as the class proceeds to its conclusion. The facilitator is Marianne Riley, RRT.
