3D Tomosynthesis at Springfield Hospital

Springfield Hospital uses Tomosynthesis (3D mammograpy) which is the latest technology in breast cancer screening. This new technology provides a much more clear picture of the overall breast tissue.

How does it work?
The technology works very similarly to conventional digital mammography, however, rather than taking a two dimensional image, the new scanning equipment takes 3D images. The result is a much more detailed representation of what the breast tissue looks like.
  On a conventional mammogram, dense tissue can make it difficult to see small cancer. The new 3D mammogram allows us to perform a more detailed examination of the layers of the breast tissue than is possible with a traditional 2-dimensional mammogram. So, the result is increased accuracy of screening that allows us to detect breast cancer we may not otherwise see until much later. 

What does 3D Tomosynthesis mean for patients?
Patients will now have all the benefits of a more detailed mammogram, improved detectability of breast cancer, with essentially no increase in radtiation exposure. Increased detection means increased chances for effective treatment, since early detection is the best defense against breast cancer.
     3D mammography can "significantly detect more invasive cancers than the traditional mammogram" according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, reporting that 3D mammography greatly reduced call-backs for women to undergo secondary imaging.
