Digital Mammography At Springfield Hospital

Women who have mammograms at Springfield Hospital are benefitting from new digital technology. For many women—particularly those under age 50, women with dense breast tissue, and those who are pre- or peri-menopausal—digital technology is significantly more accurate.

The exam itself is not noticeably different to patients. Like traditional film mammography, digital mammography uses compression and x-ray to generate breast images. However, the images are now recorded in digital form and immediately available to radiologists for prompt diagnosis.

Since digital mammography offers enhancements in how the breast can be viewed and manipulated by radiologists, accuracy is improved. Radiologists can now magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast, and invert the black and white values while reading the images on high-resolution computer monitors. These features allow radiologists to detect small calcifications, masses, and other changes that were previously difficult to identify and that may be signs of early cancer.

In addition, soft touch mammography provides added patient comfort, and computer-aided detection technology is used to screen all mammograms. This provides a digitized “second look” that highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer and flags abnormalities that help radiologists detect early breast cancer.
