Union Street School 2nd Graders Offer Gifts Of Warmth

Glenn Cordner, CEO of Springfield Hospital, and Holly Trail, RN, Nurse Manager of The ChildBirth Center, welcome Jennifer Carr and her 2nd grade class as they deliver their gifts of hand-made baby blankets.
Jennifer Carr’s 2nd grade class from Union Street School in Springfield showed their compassion and generosity while studying citizenship and what it really means to be a good citizen within your community. As a community service project, the class decided they would like to help local mothers and make baby blankets to keep newborn babies warm.
The children picked the fabrics they wanted to use, designed a pattern on their blankets and, with the help of para-educator Janice Stevens, the students sewed their quilts using a sewing machine.
Then, as a group, the class walked up to Springfield Hospital, blankets in hand, and delivered the 17 very colorful and beautifully-made baby blankets to Holly Trail, RN, Nurse Manager of the ChildBirth Center, and Glenn Cordner, Chief Executive Officer of Springfield Hospital.
“Our class worked on these blankets for two months,” commented Jennifer Carr. “Donations for the fabric were given by the teachers and staff of Union Street School.
“This is a wonderful example of educators going beyond textbooks, and imparting an important life lesson to their students that will benefit the community and the students for years to come. The excitement and achievement shared by these young citizens makes us very pleased to accept their gifts of warmth on behalf of the families who will ultimately use them for their newborns,” commented Glenn Cordner. He continued, “We are very impressed with their hard work and generosity. Their blankets are a wonderful gift of love and kindness.” ###
