Springfield Hospital Receives Grant for Oncology Clinic
Posted on 2/13/2012

SPRINGFIELD, VT —  Springfield Hospital has received a two-year grant in the amount of $105,000 from the Fanny Holt Ames and Edna Louise Holt Fund.  The grant will help the hospital enhance its oncology program by offering a variety of support programs to help patients manage cancer and treatment-related side effects. The mission of the program, named “Healing Pathways,” will be to help cancer patients transition to proactive cancer survivors who feel secure in body, mind, and spirit.

Patients of Springfield Hospital who are living with cancer will be offered assistance and financial support that will help improve aspects of daily life to facilitate recover and healing, including creative arts, retreats, nutrition and exercise, education, self-care supplies, and transportation.

The treatment for cancer is often a harsh regime.  Overall quality of life and patient satisfaction affect a patient’s ability to continue with the treatment.  Wellness services assist patients in the process of completing and recovering from the debilitating cancer treatment. Linda Hurley, RN, Manager of the Specialty Clinics at Springfield Hospital notes, “We have seen that active participants in the fight for recovery have an improved quality of life and an enhanced possibility of recovery.”

Springfield Hospital is part of Springfield Medical Care Systems (SMCS), a not-for-profit, community-based health care system that includes nine community health centers.  SMCS provides an integrated system of care that is patient-centered and emphasizes quality, access and affordability for all, with financial assistance available based on a sliding fee scale.  Services include primary and preventative health care for people of all ages, pediatrics, diagnostic lab and radiology services, a broad array of acute hospital and specialty services, health screenings, mental health programs, dental care, and access to discounted pharmaceuticals.  For more information about SMCS and its subsidiaries, please visit www.springfieldmed.org.
